Entry 131.5

Light snow, chilly
Winterhaven, Graveyard outside town

Awoken in the middle of the night by the Lord Paidraig. Some of the Town’s children were abducted and taken to the graveyard. The Raiders were called to the graveyard. This (I suspect) was in retaliation of looking into the keep. Coldstriker took Skarya, Bruuk and myself to the graveyard.

The Raven had sent up an Ram symbol which raised the dead in the graveyard. They were dispatched by Skarya and Bruuk. I finished the Raven myself. The children were saved and taken back home. The mage was called to deal with the Ram magic, but Bruuk dispelled it before she arrived.

Walked back to town. Tired, must sleep.

Winterhaven, Keep (get sled tomorrow!)

Further exploration of the keep is necessary to ensure the safety of the town folk. Lord Paidraig gave us six healing potions, from Sister Linora, with prodding from Skarya (He is good at getting good for service.) Sister Linora asked to make some holy water.

Six Healing Potions
30 SP given to Sister Linora for Holy Water

Explored north portion of the Keep. All monsters found and killed are listed below. Points of interest, smashing in door is not always effective, Goblins were digging out a section of the Keep?

Winterhaven, Keep (Borrowed Sleight and pony from Thair)

Continued with exploration of the Keep. Skayra and Bruuk came along. Others appear to be ill with a cold. Explored a smaller section today. Leave old sections alone (the monsters in these areas are vile, I had to throw away my old cloak it stank so bad, and not worth the spoils. Also likely someone has already taken everything and left ‘witty’ notes.)

Note From Kalel
Found on Ninaran in Cemetary

My dearest Sara Jor-el

I received your report on the adventurers. Next time you see them put an end to their meddling. Mix the blood of 10 people with the elixir my messanger brings. Then trace the holy symbol of Orcus upon the ground of the graveyard and pour the liquid upon the lines. That should supply you with the force required to thwart them. I’m very close to completion, my love, see that I’m not interrupted. As you already know if you do come to the second level of the keep the pass phrase is “From the ground, some magic is found”.

Like a Sheep to the Slaughter
There's a reason eh

The wagon continued lurching around the mountains, the boy Kal-El with his scar and his brooding personality sits moodily in the back, while his little sister bounces partly due to energy and partly due to the rock road before she too falls quite by his side and in mock brooding, falls asleep.

The Carriage stopped quietly, The boy looking out the window does not recognize the area and is spooked when the driver opens the door quitely and pointing to Sara Jor-el sound asleep, and gestures for the boy to come and stretch his legs.

The boy follows, the driver is one of the old guard, a Knight-Gallant turned retainer in his old age. He leads the boy to a waterfall and ancient ruins smiling at the boyish wonder on his face. Smiling until he remembers his task and drawing the shortsword at his belt swings at the boy as his back is turned. His thoughts are “Least I can do Is make it quick for him and his sister”

He Missed, the boy darts away, the fierce, dead look in his eyes again, he darts behind the stones in a circle. Grabbing for anything a weapon … a rock. He surprised the old man, Coming at him where the old man expected no resistance, Bringing the rock down between his eyes. The Driver had worn no armour , no helm. This skull was crushed in, his blood painting the boy, hitting the ground wetly as the circle pulsed into life. This place was old, ancient and the boy understood this. Two men enter the circle , One man leaves with a vision of his future. The boy saw what he had to do, to survive.

The Sister Awoke alone, scared she began to cry until the small window opened up to the driver’s seat. Where oddly enough her brother sat. Confused she accepted this, and bounced up beside him when given the chance. The boy never looked back.

He knew what he had to do.

A Day in the Life
Blame Story Gamers

So imagine you’re this goblin-you have a goblin name, like grug or something-and Kal-el has assigned you and your pals to guard the entrance to the dungeon. It’s cool. You dug a big pit, and then covered the opening with carefully camouflaged floor-looking bits. Then you filled that pit with rats. Ha ha, poor adventuring saps are totally going to get it.

So yeah, it’s kind of dull, and you’re trying to be vigilant.

But dude, there’s no way you could spot a 29 sneak roll. It’s not your fault.

So next thing you know, this halfling appears out of nowhere, and she carves into you with a Shruiken. Holy crap. How can such a little Shruiken hurt you that badly? Is that your spleen on the ground there?

And then all of a sudden she trips and shoves you, or… well fuck, who knows what she did? He’s a blur of confusion. All you know is you’re somersaulting right toward her pals - four of them, uh oh - at the foot of the stairs you thought you were guarding.

At least the pit trap surprises them. As they fall into it. And get attacked by the rats.

Damn halfling rogues.

A Journey of a Thousand Miles
The Ascent of Kal-el

The dream settles around you, a comfortable thing. It no longer surprises you that the dreams come to you when you sleep. You watch the boy Kal-el older now, the scar still livid but healed on his face. The boy must be 11 or 12 now. You stand behind his shoulder as a carriage the carriage finally arrives. You hear a Knight behind him say “The passes are clear and the carriage has arrived, where is your sister, Kal-El?”

The grizzled old man is the new Lord of the keep, and it doesn’t sit well with him. Where your father thrived under the weight of the responsibilities here, this old fart sagged. Just doing the motions until he too, collapsed, dead and then a new lord would take over.

But never you, Kal-el, a voice whispers mockingly, silencing it Kal-el thanks the Lord of the Keep, Elias Paidraig, and the old man hesitantly embraces the lad and lets him go.

You watch the boy Kal-El leave through the old man’s eyes, the sense of loss is nearly overwhelming, not only the lord but his son too. The knowledge that he is to be the last Lord of Cairngorm Keep weights heavy on Paidrag’s shoulder’s. Better that the rift be forgotten, before anymore accidents occur…

You watch Kal-El join his sister who seems too young beside him. Sara Jor-El still appears but a wisp of a girl, untouched by what has happened, unlike her brother, and his scars. You notice the tiny mithril gear work embroidered into her dress… and the amulet that Kal-El carries, a tiny perfect mithril gear symbol of Erathis.

The carriage is loaded and finally the children, the driver flicks the reins and with a slow but steady plod the carriage jerks and then moves, until it is practically out of sight in the mountains. You see the stony look the boy gives the keep as it passes out of sight, I will return the boy thinks to himself as he takes his sisters hand and waits for what will happen next.

Through the eyes of Skaryn

Not only is there a hangover from hell, nightmares of some crazy lord trying to slay those he loved, but I awake not only to Leevi yelling about broken wheels but blaming it on us of all things!  Ah, so this is what "civilized" lands are all about, I should have stayed in the mountains of my homeland… but gold awaits…. if I haven't drank it all away that is…

On the way to town… hahahaha!  I am with some strong arms.  These dragon type fellas can swing a sword (and though I don't like admitting it the one Nadar has inspired even me to some great feats in battle, and Bruok will always share a drink although his thirst for battle will get us all in trougble) , and the quiet elf has an amazing talent to bind my hurts (and though he prays to his god he is open to my talks of Crom), but it is the small one who I think can be most beneficial in a fight… (perhaps if Vanee buys me a few drinks I will sign that paper she keeps waving in my face telling me that with it I can keep what I take from those I kill, is that not my blood right to take what I have earned through blood?  I need paper for this?  These civilized people seem so backward that it pains me at times) it is always the one you least expect… but let me tell you what happened…. I am walking through the forest, let the noisy ones in the heavy armor attract the attention.  And what do I see behind a boulder right in front of me and completely oblivious?  A strange reptilian smelly creature… kobolds!  The vile creatures really can be found everywhere. As my eyes adjust I see several of them around… now this is what I call fun!  As I spin around the boulder I eviscerate the one with my battleaxe while cleaving him from shoulder to sternum with my sword… smell even worse dead… it takes moments for my comrades to come up and we make short work of them…. Crom but that was a good fight!  I find a strange obsidian figurine around ones neck, like I cary Crom in bone around my own… perhaps it has meaning, in any way I will hold onto it for a while…

After we get some locals to come back to our wagons to help with repairs, well we get to the spot of the battle and what do you know, more of the smelly bastards… this time it seems that every time we get close to them they move just out of reach, but they are no match, and with the words of the dragonbon inspiring us we destroy them, although some die at the feet of the villagers just before we chop them down like the brittle wood they are!  Only cowards would run from warriors to try to slay those who can not even defend themselves.

Ah, the town… how I loathe these places but I have learned to hold my tongue and to pretend to enjoy the comforts… although I long for the cold air and the open sky around me we manage to find out much of the area and even manage to get "hired" on to clear the area of the kobolds.  I even share words with lord who cowers behind his walls and talks of how his men won't face this threat without naming him coward and scowndrel… but I am learning to be, how do they say… diplomatic… another strange word I don't understand…  These civilized folks pay others to do what they are to cowardly to do for themselves it seems.  But I will take the offered gold all though I would have done it for the sport and some ale and food, but when offered I take!

A dark snow has started to fall, even in my own heavy mountains I have never seen snow this close to reaping time.  It is unnatural and in a few scant hours there is enough of the heavy snow to reach up to our waists.  There is devilry afoot in these lands, unless there is something here that I know not of, and I know much about the cold and the harsh realms where civilized men fear to walk.  But I have chosen these companions well!  They do not hide inside but are ready to venture into this unforgiving weather right by my side.  Even the little one takes it upon herself to drag along a sled of all things, although I chuckle at the thought she is braver than she looks.  And the dragonborn, the drunken one is stubborn, even I don snowshoes in this weather but he trods through un-aided and with a fierceness that would make a great bear proud.

ah but this is embarrassing, I am walking and as I follow the fresh tracks of several of these slimy smelly creatures CRASH, a bear trap snaps around my leg and in moments from the hill the bastards are sliding down towards me in shields that they are using as sleds!  Badly wounded, seperated from my friends by moments that could be my end my adrenaline rushes and I tear the trap open.  Ignoring my own blood pouring freely to mar the once white snow with dark black looking blood, I also ignore the scratches on my hands as I draw my weapons and steel myself to bring as many of the cowardly beings down around me… I swing my blades in deadly arcs as I feel my legs weakening more but then I hear Nadar's voice and feel the warmth of Tharen's healing touch flood through me and sparing a moment to look around I see them, my companions facing off against more of the creatures… I am still not used to sensation of skin reknitting itself in instants, and the strength returning, i let loose a roar that shakes the trees as I move forward to join in the slaughter and soon there is much more dark and vile blood that reaks of waste and excrement covering the once fresh snow.  We clasp hands and then it is time to track down those that fled.

Did they think they could hide?  Ah but these creatures are too dumb to even know what they are up against… we move as swiftly as we can and the heavy snow hides our approach and muffles even the loudest of us in our approach… we see them… and what is this?????

the vile creatures have a magic user of some kind, he stands in a circle that pulses with blue veins of magical energy…. this is the one me must strike first… we move fast, I throw my axe which lands heavily in his side as my friends all move up and then I am beside him, hacking into him with my battle axe and sword, and with the help of Bruok and vanee and nadar and tharen he falls before he can even utter a word of mystical might.  As his blood pools over the magical circle it turns to red blood and its power and malevolence can be felt… and then it is a mixture of blood and blades and death…  we fight well, although Tharen almost loses his life it were not for nadar there to rouse him!  Crom but the blood sang in my ears and I felt the rush of the battlefield as I moved through weaving a tide of death in my wake… My battleaxe cleaves the head of one as I sidestep and skewer another through, but in a rush that I did not know I had I flow into the middle of four more of the creatures and in a heartbeat only one remains standing!  I do not know if I am laughing or growling or howling like a wolf on the hunt but the world is red and I give a grudging respect to these reptilian smelly creatures for they do not retreat but all die on our blades as is befitting warriors of any race!

We bind our wounds and look to the half frozen waterfall and wonder what danger lies beyond it…

What we do know is that we will face it together and at the end of the day the riddle of steel will determine who stands….

New Beginings
This is only... the begining

The Caravan creaked down the king’s road. The rhythmic fall of cloven hoofs and the turn or wooden axels singing a dangerously methodic tune. Even only at the foot of the Cairngorm Peaks a 10 foot fall waited on oneside of the road, followed by more steep ground that would ensure broken bones and rended flesh if the wagon driver’s didn’t keep an eye on everything. But none felt this so keenly as the wagon driver’s themselves.

The Caravan belonged to one Mister Levi a impossibly short and chubby human with a deft mind at tradecraft. Mister Levi was so short, a little under 5 foot, as to be jokingly refered to as a halfling, and only half jokingly. Having left from Greysky City some months ago the caravan has been threw hill and dale, forest and thicket, and has finally arrived on the Cairngorm Mountains following the king’s Road to Winterhaven, where Mister Levi will turn the caravan arround and head back to grey sky, to restock, sell whatever he had thought to purchase locally, and do the whole trip over again, as he does about twice a year.

The Afternoon sun quickly disappears behind the mountains, and the wagontrain ends early. Finding a likely spot nestled off the road in a small thicket of trees and such. The wagon drivers see to the horses compleigning about an ill wind. Tonight surely will be a cold night you think to yourselves. The Dryness keeps the snow to a minimum but it is quickly approaching midwinter, and you’ve been awakening to intricate arrays of frost, occassionally on your nose dispite the coal burners keep the wagon’s warm.

Settling down to Sleep after checking the coal, you dream.

Your not at all surprised at the depth or clarity of this dream, after all you’ve been having it for nights now. Only able to remember when your sleeping. You thought you saw a dark glint on the mountains of cairngorm today but no one else said anything about it.

The world shifts and you see the man, A dashing man in his fourties as he kisses his kids already soundly on their way to sleep. A woman walks in and puts her hand on his shoulder looking down at the children, a boy and a girl. Leading the man out of the bedroom you hear the woman say “Jor-el you worry too much, there is nothing wrong with the children, the prophetess was wrong “

But you know she wasn’t , You’ve seen this before. The man replies with an absent “yes my Dear Lara” He knows the prophetess wasn’t wrong either.

The chapel is clear before you, the sign of erathis, the mithril gear is clear everywhere. The man, Jor-el is crying at the alter. He knows what to do, but he doesn’t want to. He stands stilling his tears and leaves. You follow in his footsteps like a whisper.

He creeps into his wife’s room, His beloved Sara’s and drawing his sword, he ends her life with the speed and grace that only a lover can afford, The only thing she murmured as she died was “my gallant knight…Ttttt”. Cleaning his blade mechanically on the bedspread, he never saw the maid until it was too late. The maid runs screaming, before he can catch her. A guard comes running, the maid collapses into the arms of the handsome Knight Telliver, who hushes her and wait’s for his lord commander’s explanation.

Jor-el was not a good lier, so without a word he leads Telliver and the maid to the room to inspect the body, quickly, urgently, as he shuts and bars the door behind them. His sword flashes with a expert precession, hamstringing the gallent knight before he ever had a chance. The maid collapses silently, only able to mouth “Why?” over and over again before the Lord Commander of Cairngorm Keep silences her permanently.

Jor-el didn’t have much time, he was agitated, he wanted no one else to die. But it was too late now, the deed had to be done. The Keep was slowly gearing into a battle ready stance. The yells and the missing Knight Telliver had set off a chain reaction. People were unsheathing swords, getting closer to the lord commander’s bedroom where they would find the evidence…

Jor-el hurried, avoiding the guards, friend and foe alike. He slips into the children’s room. His son and daughter Kal-el and Sara Jor-el lay innocently. He raised the sword ready to do his god sworn duty and Stops… Can he do it… I Must, You feel Jor-el’s pain but you know he is not an evil man, you hear the prophetesses words ringing in your ear “Your children will destroy the world and the gods” the vaunted and valued word of civilization of Erathis herself said your children will destroy the world and the gods themselves. You swing you short sword and instead of the deadly silence, the loud clash of steel follows.

The rest is a haze, the guards rushing, The frightened cries of the children. Jor-el fights with the strength and cunning of 10 men. But he falls. His blood hitting the woven rugs of the children’s room like rain. He had failed. His last thrust only manages to slice the boys face. The last thing Jor-el thinks is “gods forgive me, for failing you”

You awake, stepping into the cold and dry night of the mountains of Cairngorm. You and the other’s the other’s sharing your dream. You stand out in the cold looking to the mountains threw the mountains to the keep that you know is there. You are part of something much larger you know. You return back to your wagon’s silently, attempting to fight off the chill with fire and blankets, but it doesn’t go.

The next day you talk and are introduced to each other. Some of you know each other, some are strangers but all are guards on this caravan. You approach Winterhaven…
